Do you have a passion for the outdoors? Are you interested in protecting the environment for the next generation and helping to provide equitable access to our nation's public lands? Do you want to be a part of an organization that creates jobs and bolsters communities? Well, the SAWS Board of Directors is currently seeking candidates interested in serving on its growing and dynamic Board.  In our upcoming Fall Board Retreat, we’ll add up to five (5) directors with terms ending in November 2027, with an option to serve a second three-year term (ending in November 2030).

Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS) is an award-winning conservation non-profit organization setting standards of excellence that inspire, connect, and equip people to steward wild landscapes. Established in 2010, SAWS was born from a need for stewardship by the next generation across the southeast. In just over a decade, it has become a leading force in wild public land stewardship, traditional tool training, and wilderness education, not only here in the southeast, but across the nation.

The Board of Directors actively seeks diverse identities, backgrounds, experiences, and areas of expertise to support the work of SAWS through mission-based leadership and strategic governance. SAWS is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and antiracism in our work and partnerships. Board members with diverse lived experience and skillsets in development, legal or policy expertise, communication, or leadership roles serving on a Board are desired.

Serving on a non-profit board provides a variety of benefits to you including non-profit experience and professional development in non-profit leadership, budget and financing, fundraising and grant writing, as well as strong networking opportunities with outdoor professionals who share your interests and passion for helping to protect wild places.

We can’t possibly find the best candidates alone, so we need your help in nominating yourself or others! Many qualified candidates exist outside of our personal and networking circles, so we’re grateful for any help we receive in identifying potential Board members. Most importantly, we’re looking for high-performing people with a capacity to serve, and who value protecting and stewarding the outdoors in service to everyone!

We hope you’ll inquire today! Applications will be open for the next 45 days. For more information about next steps and how to apply to serve on the SAWS Board of Directors please email: SAWSBoardAffairs@gmail.com.
