Wilderness Specialist: George Washington & Jefferson NFs and Monongahela National Forest

Compensation: $15/hour

Position Supervisor: Regional Program Manager

Location: near Marlinton, West Virginia and Blacksburg, Virginia

 

About Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS)

SAWS was founded in 2010 to respond to a regional need for stewardship focused on federally designated wilderness. We work with the national forests in the mountain regions of Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia to provide stewardship through our four program areas: trail crews, wilderness rangers, volunteers, and education.

 

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, a Wilderness Specialists’s work will include, but is not limited to:

  • Compiling historical documents, data compilation and analysis, interviewing resource staff and technical writing
  • Working with Forest Service staff to establish pertinent tangible and intangible values of wilderness areas.
  • Working with field-going staff to understand the conditions in each wilderness
  • Database management and data entry and correction
  • Writing Wilderness Character Narratives for four wildernesses on the Monongahela National Forest and six wildernesses on the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
  • Partner and public engagement and education (Volunteer day leadership, Leave No Trace, bear safety and awareness, Wilderness education, etc.)
  • This position is estimated to be approximately 80% office-based and 20% field-based. Time will be split between Marlinton, WV and Blacksburg, VA

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, synthesize and store all important information and material pertaining to creation, legislation, administration and management of 10 wilderness areas.
  • Coordinate with USFS resource specialists and staff to collect information on the qualities of Wilderness character.
  • Write Wilderness Character Narratives to describe the wilderness and to help inform further monitoring efforts.
  • Assist SAWS staff in developing and maintaining strong, positive relationships with US Forest. Service personnel, partner organization staff, and partner organization volunteers.
  • Craft and curate media (blogs, photography, video, etc.) to share for reporting and documentation.
  • Model and practice Leave No Trace principles in the field
  • Follow and practice SAWS organizational policies in the field
  • Maintain an inclusive, safe, fun, and positive working environment
  • Maintain SAWS standards of excellence for quality for efficient project completion

 

Qualifications

In addition to enthusiasm for the SAWS mission, you will have the following:

  • Strong understanding of federally designated Wilderness and Wilderness character
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to stay organized, and work toward goals efficiently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with data analysis desired
  • Ability to travel on foot over rough terrain for up to 10 miles per day while carrying all your own gear
  • Ability to spend up to 3 days at a time in the backcountry desired
  • Knowledge of Leave No Trace ethics, including backcountry camp and travel practices
  • Ability to work alone in a remote and primitive setting
  • Desire to be a vibrant member of an enthusiastic working team and transformative non-profit organization
